EatWild Standards

Our 11 listing criteria

Every farm applying to EatWild confirms the criteria that apply to the products it sells. Some standards apply to every farm, while others apply only to specific animal or product categories.

Standards for all farms

  1. Animals are raised outdoors, on pasture, in a low-stress, natural environment and treated humanely from birth to market.
  2. Animals may be confined indoors briefly to protect their welfare during birthing, extreme weather, or to prevent soil damage. Poultry and small animals may be confined at night to protect them from predators.
  3. Animal grazing patterns are managed to enhance pasture growth, animal health, and the health of the land.
  4. Streams and other natural water sources are protected from harmful animal impact.

Ruminants

  1. When high-quality pasture is not available, beef and other ruminants may be fed stored grasses such as hay, haylage, or grass silage, plus vegetable by-products with small amounts of molasses. They are not fed grain, soy, corn silage, or rations or concentrates containing those ingredients.
  2. Animals are not treated with hormones.
  3. Animals are not treated with routine, low-level antibiotics. When antibiotics are medically necessary, products are not sold until they are antibiotic-free.

Product-specific standards

  1. Poultry: Poultry is raised outdoors on good-quality pasture as soon as it is old enough. Birds receive significant nourishment from growing plants for at least six hours per day. Supplemental grain and seeds are permitted.
  2. Pigs and rabbits: Pigs or rabbits are raised outdoors on good pasture with growing plants available. Supplemental grain, nuts, seeds, fruits, and other nutritious foods are permitted.
  3. Dairy: Dairy animals are raised on pasture with little or no grain. If grain is provided, the type and daily amount are disclosed. Dairy animals sold for meat meet the same ruminant feed criteria above.
  4. Multi-farm and co-op listings: These listings are accepted on a case-by-case basis and may require signed statements from each participating farm confirming compliance with EatWild's criteria.
The application form shows only the product-specific criteria that apply to the farm's selected products. All visible criteria must be confirmed before an application can proceed.
